Good Point!

I have just finished reading a really great book. it is called Absolutely American and it is about the 4 years that the author David Lippsky spent at West Point (The United States Military Academy). West Point has a college reputation that is not far off the Ivy League schools, and essentially creates leaders. Some alumni include General Patton, Eisenhower, bradley, McArthur and Schwarzkopf....all of who now take up considerable space in any history book.

Looks like any other college!

Interesting Facts:

  • A West Point entering class will have a median Grade Point Average of 3.5 (87.5%)
  • 60% are Varsity team captains
  • Out of 12,000 applicants 1,200 will receive a place
  • Cadets receive an education worth $250,000
  • In 1998 applications dropped after the release of the film "Saving Private Ryan"
  • To stay enrolled all cadets must pass a fitness exam every few months, exam consists of 42 push ups in 2 minutes, 53 sit ups in 2 minutes and run 2 miles in 15:54

Another piece of the book which I found interesting was the Military Problem Solving Process. For any problem in life , there's seven guidelines to keep things rational.

  1. Recognise and Define the Problem
  2. Gather Facts and make Assumptions
  3. Define End States and Establish Criteria (criteria is how you know you've reached those end states)
  4. Develop Possible Solutions
  5. Analyse and Compare Possible Solutions
  6. Select and Implement Solution
  7. Analyse Solution for effectiveness

I have set one of my summer goals as being able to complete the fitness test. And I also think i will follow that problem solving process in future.
